Is This You?
ARE YOU…
A former actor?
You probably earned a degree or diploma in acting at some point (or at least came close to it). You did a lot of amateur work, a little semi-pro work, maybe even some professional work. Then you just stopped. Maybe you had a family, got a real job, took up a different (aka better paying) profession. Maybe you just got tired of the endless rounds of auditions without getting anything. Maybe you received a bad review that you never recovered from. Whatever the reason, you stopped. But now, five, ten, fifteen years later, you’re at a point in your life that you want to get back on those boards. You’re longing to create a character, analyze text, tell a story, feel the audience riding that wave with you. But how do you get there? All that training and experience is in your body and mind somewhere, but you’re having trouble accessing it. Because unlike painting, or writing, the performing arts are not easily done in isolation. And when you can’t practice, your skills dwindle.
An actor who wants to take it to the next level?
With or without a degree you’re doing it. Well…sort of. You do A LOT of unpaid or honorarium-type gigs, community theatre, fringe shows, small companies that can’t afford to pay their actors, or the kind that only pay the Equity actors. And you can’t quite seem to break through to that next level. You’ve probably got a few conspiracy theories that vary on the theme of “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” that you wax eloquently about when you get together with friends. But there’s also a little voice inside you that wonders if maybe there is some information you’re missing, or a skill that you never learned that would make all the difference.
An under-utilized professional?
You’re a professional. Of course you are. You even have the union accreditation to prove it. But you only do one show a year, sometimes only one show every two years. And now you’re at a point in your life where you can do more, but you really want to shine up that actor instrument and make sure you’re at the top of your game.
An acting teacher?
You teach acting. You would like to re-energize your programme. What better way than by learning the techniques that professionals actually use in their work?
A 2.5 threat rather than a triple threat?
You’re a singer. You’re a dancer. You’re an actor. Except that, truth be told, you’ve put most of your efforts into the singing and dancing and not quite as much into the acting. Here’s your chance to change your 2.5 to a full-on three.
These are the broad categories of who we feel would benefit most from this class. If you don’t fit any of these descriptions, apply and make your case! We can’t think of everything…
Note: We recognize and value that each participant will come into this course with a significant body of knowledge and experience. It is not our intention for the above decriptions to be insulting or depressing or to bring up your stuff, although we acknowledge it might. This course was designed to meet a need and so we needed to describe it.
